I would like to share a little insights in how I work and how I arrange the process when creating larger sets for the TRIBE. Basically doing a larger set each month is hard work, but I truly love the results!
For November I decided to go back to one of my most popular subjects – which is the battle of lake Peipus which took place in 1242 and was the German military Order Knights – The Teutonic Order fighting against the city of Novgorod led by their young Prince Alexander Nevsky. Also vassals of the Danish King Valdemar did fight alongside the Teutonic Order and Mongol warriors did fight on the side of Novgorod.
A short descriptiong of the battle:
The Battle of Lake Peipus, also known as the Battle on the Ice, occurred on April 5, 1242, on the frozen surface of Lake Peipus between Russian forces led by Prince Alexander Nevsky of Novgorod and the invading Teutonic Knights. The clash was part of a broader conflict over religious and territorial influence in the region, with the Teutonic Order seeking to spread Catholicism among the Eastern Orthodox populations of northern Russia. Outnumbered and facing heavily armored knights, Nevsky employed strategic ingenuity; he lured the Teutonic forces onto the brittle ice, which broke under the weight of their armor. The Teutonic knights found themselves trapped and overrun, and many drowned in the icy waters. This decisive victory not only safeguarded Novgorod’s sovereignty but also marked a halt to the Catholic expansion into Eastern Orthodox lands. Nevsky’s triumph at Lake Peipus became legendary, symbolizing resistance against foreign invasion and cementing his status as a Russian hero.
So when I know who fought I began having a sculptor do a master figure of both fraction and also did find different combat poses which I find could work together, I like the idea that you can build the full set, or use individually or as duels. When I have the models from the sculptor I begin to adjust, adjust and adjust this way trying to make them look realistic. When satisfied with the figures I begin to do different line-ups/compositions untill I end up with something I would like for myself… Then I lock the scene and add final details, separate, add supports and make images….
